Sport i Kenya

Athletics
Kenya is one of the world’s best counties at athletics. They do it good at many distance events. One of the most known athletics from Kenya is Catherine Ndebera who won women’s Boston marathon four times and was world champion two times and Paul Tergat, the marathon world record holder. During the Olympic games in Beijing Kenya won 5 gold, 5 silver and 4 bronze in athletichs.

Cricket
Cricket is one popular sport in Kenya. Probably Because it was an English colony in many years and many Britons lives there, and in England cricket is a popular sport. Kenya has one of the worlds best team and came to the semi-final in the Cricket World Cup in 2003.

Rugby
Kenya is called a rugby union. In 2006 Kenya was ranked as 9th in the world.

Rally
Kenya is home of the famous safari rally. It was a part of the World Rally Championship, but since 2003 financial problems make them just with the Africa Rally Championship.

Volleyball
Kenya has one of Africa's best ladies volleyball team. They have also competed at the Olympics and World Championship, but with no notable success.

Nairobi is the capital in Kenya. The city lies in the south part of Kenya. Nairobi is just around 100 years old and has about 2,5 millions inhabitants. Nairobi doesn’t have very many historic buildings, but the surroundings are great. For example the 5199m tall volcano Mount Kenya. The city is situated 1800 m over the ocean and it is Kenya’s economic center.
It is not very many tourist attractions in Nairobi, but there are some great nature territories outside the city. For example between Nairobi and Mombasa you can find one of the largest game reserves in the whole world. It is called Tsavo. There you can watch the animal life and natural wonders like underground springs. To the north you can also see Mount Kenya that is 5199m tall and Kenya’s tallest mountain, Kilimanjaro, in southeast on 5895m.
There are some tourist attractions in Nairobi, like the Kenyan National museum. The name Nairobi is coming from the Masai expression ”chilled water”.
In the end of the 1800 century Nairobi was just swamps in a lowering, but now Nairobi has becomed the main center for the whole East-Africa. It is also the largest city between Cairo and South-Africa. Many places in Nairobi consists of wide avenues and high-rise buildings.

Maasai
Maasai are one of the most famous indigenous, ethnic groups in Kenya and Tanzania. Their language is Maa and member of the Nilo-Saharan Language family who are related to Dinko and Nuer.
In 1994 there were 453,000 who spoke Maa in Kenya.
The Maasai people have their own mythology, where Einka is the big god whit two personalities, one good and one evil.
According to their own oral-story they come from the lower Nile valley north for Lake Turkana. They are shepherds and mostly deal with zebu-cattle, but also deals with sheep’s and goats. And the flocks give them what thy need to live. The traditional food is based on milk, often mixed with blood tapped form bull.
The community is organized in age classes. The boys get status as “warriors” when they get circumcised in an age of 16-17, later on in an age of 25-30 they become “old warriors” and are permitted to raise a family.
